茂县人民医院始建于1953年初1997年创建二级乙等医院，2004年创建二级甲等医院，2017年二甲复查评审成功。
灾后，按照“三级乙等”医院标准进行重建。医院占地面积为30余亩，建筑面积达3.3万余平方米。装备了美国GE公司16排照螺旋CT、核磁共振、骨密度仪、DR、化学发光检验、高精多普勒彩超及荷兰进口与国内先进康复等大中型医疗设备，总价值3.4千万元。
医院现法定病床260张，实际开放病床206张
